No fewer than 50 indigent patients were operated free of charge by the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Nigeria (APSON), on Monday,  September 25, 2023, during a surgical mission carried out at the main theatre complex of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

The free surgical mission is part of the activities heralding the 22nd Annual Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting (ASC/AGM) of the APSON, themed ‘’Evidence-Based Practice in Paediatric Surgery”, and sub-themed, “Sub-Specialization in Paediatric Surgery: Opportunities and Challenges.”

The conference commenced with a courtesy visit from the executive members of the association and the sponsor of the surgery to LASUTH Management of the hospital.

During the visit, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) Professor Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, while welcomed and congratulated the association on their Annual Scientific Conference, also saluted the sponsors of the mission, NOVA Merchant Bank, and referred to them as partners supporting the hospital because of their noble contributions to this cause.

He said, “LASUTH is obviously a preferred destination for healthcare services. Our hospital is rapidly progressing and we welcome all and sundry who would like to be a part of the good work being done here.”

The Executive Director of NOVA Merchant Bank said, “we are grateful to the management of the hospital for giving us an opportunity to express our intentions by rendering our support through the funding of this surgical mission. Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) this year is themed ‘Uplift’, and we believe that we would be giving hope to the children who are not able to afford such surgical care  by partnering with the association on this mission; doing this is important to us as an organization.”

The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee who is also a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon in LASUTH, Dr. Omolara Williams, revealed that the surgeries are ‘daycase surgeries’ for indigent children, this is the part of the association’s efforts to support the Lagos State Government to ease the burden on parents who cannot afford the already subsidized fees being offered by the State Government.

Dr. Omolara appreciated the Lagos State Government for placing premium on healthcare and also providing quality healthcare for children, this has made practicing Paediatric Surgery in Lagos quite endearing because it ensures that a number of people can access the care.

She also extended appreciation to the management of the hospital, especially the Chief Medical Director, for his exemplary leadership that has made the hospital progressed through the years.

The Annual Scientific Conference continues from 25th to 30th September with different activities.
