There was a rowdy session recently at the Artmiabo International Art Festival, hosted at Ebony Life Place, Victoria Island, Lagos, where some attendees at the event challenged a specific artwork they claimed that underscored the complexities of religious sensitivities in Nigeria.

The incident which occurred on April 29 was marked by a notable controversy surrounding a specific artwork unfolded during the setup on April 28 when a painting aimed at promoting unity between Christians and Muslims sparked objections due to perceived insensitivity regarding the use of sacred texts.

Crafted by an undisclosed artist and activist, the artwork incorporated pages from both the Bible and the Quran to symbolize the divide between the two religions, however advocates for inclusivity and harmony.

Despite the initial objections, the piece was displayed at the event, prompting significant discussions about artistic expression and religious sensitivities.

While the artwork did not remain on display throughout the entirety of the festival, which lasted for about two days, its presence ignited hot conversations about the role of art in addressing societal issues.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by artists navigating religious themes in a diverse and sensitive society, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful dialogue and understanding in artistic expression.
