LASG Meets Insurance Associations Over Building Insurance Law
In a bid to ensure successful implementation of the Regional Planning and Development Law 2019 (Amendment), which stipulates that owners/developers of buildings above 2 floors present their certificates of Insurance, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has met with officials of the Nigerian Insurance Association.
The meeting was held at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Physical Planing and Urban Development, Alausa, Ikeja, today.
A release issued by the Agency’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, Adetayo-Akintoye Asagba, after the meeting stated that the Honourable Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako who chaired the meeting, while addressing the insurance practitioners, noted that the new law had become necessary in order to safeguard lives and property of Lagosians while also maintaining a better environment for all Lagosians.
The release further stated that the Commissioner maintained that the law was also enacted in order to secure the built environment and achieve an orderly, organized, livable and sustainable state. And therefore enjoined the Association to explore ingenious ideas that would ensure the success of its implementation.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Development, Hon. Ganiyu Adele Ayuba advised the Association to seek ways of ensuring that the building public have confidence in them by embarking on various enlightenment and advocacy programs that would keep Lagosians abreast of the products they are offering.
Also, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Architect Foluso Dipe, thanked the association for their contributions, while enjoined them to work closely with the LASBCA in order to achieve good results. He also assured them of the Ministry’s full support in carrying out the task.
On her part, the General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency, Engineer Biola Kosegbe opined that working directly with the Association and it’s 43 members is a welcome development seeing that the present process the Agency employs to verify and authenticate insurance documents is cumbersome.
Speaking further, Engr. Kosegbe implored members of the Association to deploy technology that will make the process smooth, secure and easily accessible by both the Agency and prospective owners/developers, adding that the Agency would work closely with the Association to develop terms to be engaged especially for areas that have high susceptibility to failure.
While appreciating the LASBCA for facilitating the meeting, the Director General of the Association, Mrs. Yetunde Ilori affirmed that all their members had agreed to present a united front rather than work individually to ensure that there is uniformity in the process. She also assured that adequate checks would be put in place to keep all players in line so as to achieve a seamless and successful take off Insurance laws in Lagos State.
