The wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu have been commended for her role in ensuring the commencement of the construction of a new Somolu General Hospital.

A right group, Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) gave the commendation on Tuesday, while speaking at the site provided for the new general hospital.

HURMA through its Executive Director, Buna Olaitan Isiak, while narrating the steps taken by the group in ensuring that the people of the local government were provided with another general hospital, equally commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and all political office holders from the local government, for approving the upgrading and extension of the General Hospital facilities and the Council’s secretariat.

Comrade Buna, HURMA’s Executive Director (In Blue Suit) Speaking At The Site For New Somolu General Hospital

The group in the statement tagged: “appreciation letter for gradual delivering on your promise to ensure upgrade of Somolu General Hospital, You are indeed a first Lady to all of us,” stated that Dr. Sanwo-Olu’s have demonstrated that she is a person with integrity whose words can be taken for good without fear.

HURMA’s statement reads in part: “the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) hereby on behalf of entire members of Somolu community write to appreciate your role in ensuring: the development of Somolu General Hospital.

“Our office was officially briefed recently by the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Salaudeen Dullar, with confirmation from the L.G representative at Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Olowo Rotimi, among others that the Lagos State Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu, has finally, approved the-upgrading and extension of Somolu General Hospital general facilities and the secretariat of Somolu Local Government which is located beside the hospital be vacated for that purpose.

“This is to allow proper extension and development of the hospital to a higher standard and to respond appropriately to the-neéds of patients from the community and beyond.

“We are impressed to observe that the demolition process of the local government secretariat structure has also commenced.

“We are indeed impressed by your role in ensuring this reality which may not be known to many. By this development, you have kept and delivered on your promise-to our office before your emergence as the First Lady.

‘‘I could recollect that the struggle to develop Somolu General Hospital started few years back when the death of a pregnant woman was reported to our office amidst other complaints, as published in the last edition of Rights Monitors.

“Sometimes around February 2018, HURMA, had alleged in a press conference that the “Lagos state government murdered an ordinary citizen, Mrs, Ester Ajayi, at Somolu General Hospital, with her unborn baby (she was pregnant) on the excuse of “No Room for admission”.

“HURMA volunteered to build some blocks since the government could not afford it, but this was frustrated. The Executive Director of HURMA, Comrade Buna lsiak, made the intention for a total battle with the Lagos state government and turned down the invitation by the Lagos state commissioner for health. The story was highiy pathetic and frustrating.

“It is however more disheartening and frustrating that such incidents is yet to remain history in society”. The above incidents happened during your tenure as the Medical Director of Somolu General Hospital and coincidental with the nomination of Mr. Governor, your husband, as governorship candidate for Lagos State. It was during this period that the Your Excellency arranged a meeting with our office and promised that if Mr. Sanwo-Olu the APC gubernatorial candidate eventually became the governor of Lagos State, we are assured that things will improve for better and the declining capacity of the General Hospital will surely be addressed.

“Your Excellency, by this latest development, you have demonstrated that you are a person with integrity whose words can be taken for good without fear.

“We indeed appreciate your action which has fundamentally challenged the thought process of average Nigerians, that the Nigerian ruling elite is a corrupt criminal class of talk talk only with little or no action. Finally, we promise to be what we have always been by always ensuring that the government at all levels deliver on their constitutional functions as enshrined in Chapter 2 of the Nigerian 1999 Constitution as  amended, under Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policies.

“Thanks for your continuous support for the human rights cause.”
