The family of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor (popularly known as Phyna), has been thrown into mourning following the death of her younger sister, Ruth Otabor, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a truck accident.

Ruth, a recent graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, was involved in a ghastly accident on August 13, 2025, near the institution’s main gate. A heavy-duty truck reportedly linked to the Dangote Group collided with a commercial motorcycle on which she was riding, leaving her with severe injuries. She subsequently underwent a leg amputation in a desperate bid to save her life.

Despite extensive medical interventions and financial support facilitated by the Dangote Group, including the covering of hospital bills and arrangements for advanced treatment abroad—Ruth passed away in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, 2025, at approximately 6:30 a.m.

In a statement signed by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on behalf of the Otabor family, her death was confirmed:

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Miss Ruth Otabor, who tragically lost her life after sustaining injuries in the accident of August 13. The family requests privacy as they mourn this painful loss.”

The Dangote Group expressed condolences, stating that it had worked closely with the family throughout Ruth’s treatment process and would continue to support them. Representatives of the company also evacuated Ruth’s remains from the hospital mortuary, with burial arrangements expected to be announced soon.

Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has also commiserated with the Otabor family and pledged to intensify safety measures for heavy-duty vehicle operators. The Corps Marshal, in a statement, emphasized the need for stricter monitoring, training, and recertification of drivers to prevent similar tragedies.

Public reaction to the incident has been intense, with the hashtag #JusticeForRuth trending across social media platforms, as fans and concerned Nigerians call for accountability and improved road safety.

As the Otabor family mourns, tributes continue to pour in for Ruth, who was described by friends and colleagues as vibrant, ambitious, and full of promise.
