3 Fake Spiritualists Remanded For Duping Couple Of N675m

 A Special Offences Court, sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, today ordered the remand in Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS), three spiritualists, Morufu Yahya Adewale, Omitogun Ajayi and Ajisegiri Abiodun for allegedly defrauded a couple to the whooping sum of N675 million. 

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo who presided over the Court, ordered their remand in NCS’s facility after they were arraigned by the  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The three alleged fraudsters were arraigned before the court on two counts charge of conspiracy to obtaining money by false pretences from the couple, named Dr and Dr. (Mrs) Lateef Olademeji Bello.

 Their actions according to the EFCC contravened section 1(1)(a) and (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, No.14 of 2006.

It also in contravention of section 410 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, No. 11 of 2011

Arraigning the defendats, the EFCC counsel, Mr. Nkereuwen Anana told the court that the defendants sometimes in May 2018 obtained the sum of N675 million from the complaint Dr and Dr. Mrs Lateef Olademeji Bello for the purpose of conducting prayers, spiritual cleansing of their son and the family and the money will be refunded after the prayers. 

They pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to them. 

Following their plea, Anana asked the court for a trial date and also urged the court to remand the defendants in correctional facility.

Responding to the prosecutor’s request, the defence counsel, Omitogun Ajayi and Ajisegiri Abiodun and Olalekun Ojo (SAN) informed the court of their bail application dated February 24, 2020. They added that the prosecution counsel had filed a counter-affidavit which  they  want to respond to.

They therefore prayed the court for an adjournment for hearing of their bail application. 

Justice Taiwo subsequently ordered that the defendants be remanded at the Ikoyi correctional facility and hearing of bail application to March 23, 2020.
