Court Jails Man For Attempted To Smuggle Prohibited Drugs To Morocco

Justice Ibrahim Kala of a Lagos Federal High Court, today, convicted and sentenced a hard drugs smuggler, Godwin ThankGod, to four years imprisonment, for attempted to smuggle 7.10 kilograms of Codeine and 100 grams of Rohypnol, a psychotropics substance.

The convicted drugs smuggler was given the jail-term after he pleaded guilty to the charges of unlawful importation of the banned substances made against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The prosecutor, Mr. Abu Ibrahim, while arraigning the convict, told the court that he was arrested with the prohibited drugs on January 11, 2024, at the department gate of the terminal 2, of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

He also told the court that the convict was arrested during outward clearance of passengers of Royal Air Maroc flight to Casablanca, the Morocco capital.

The prosecutor told the court that actions of the convict, contravened sections 20 (1)(a) and punishable under section 20 (2)(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation on of Nigeria, 2004. 

The convict, after the charge was read to him, admitted commiting the offences and pleaded guilty to the charges.

Following the convict’s guilty plea, the prosecutor, with court’s permission, reviewed the facts of the charge and tendered some exhibits, which include; the seized prohibited drugs, the convict’s confessional statements, results of scientific test conducted on the drugs and others, which were admitted by the court.

After the review the facts of the charge and rendering of exhibits, the prosecutor urged the court to convict and sentence the drugs smuggler in accordance with the sections of law he was charged with.

Justice Kala in his judgment, after taken allucutor from the convict’s lawyer, sentenced him to two years in each of the counts.

The judge however ordered the convict to pay the sum of N500, 000,00, in lieu of the jail-term.
