Court Isolates Funke Akindele, Husband 14 Days For Violating Social Distance Order

A Lagos chief Magistrate’s Court, today, ordered that the Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele and her husband, Abdulrasheed Bello, be isolated for 14 days, after the pleaded guilty for violating social distance order of Lagos state government.

Apart from 14 days isolation, Chief Magistrate Aje Afuwa, also ordered the convicted couple to pay the sum of N100, 000, 00 each and to observe 14 days community service.

They were also ordered to visit 19 important places in Lagos, in order to educate people on the need to comply with the rules. They were as well admonished to be law abiding citizens of the state.

The Court also mandated the convicted couple to provide the names and phone numbers of everyone who attended their party within 24 hours.

The Office of Attorney-General of Lagos State had arraigned Funke and her husband, Abdulrasheed, also known with stage name as JJC Skillz, before the Court, on a count charge of non compliance with social distance directives order.

The offence according to the AG, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) is contrary to count charge pursuant to Regulation 8(1)(a) & (b) and 17(1)(i) of the Lagos State Infectious Disease (Emergency Prevention) Regulation 2020 and punishable under under Section 58 Public Health Law Cap P16 Vol. 9 Laws of Lagos State, 2015. 

The convicted couple had pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to them.

Following their guilty plea, Onignanjo (SAN) asked the court to convict the couple as charged.

However, their lawyer had pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercy, as his clients were first time offenders with no previous criminal record.

Their lawyer also told the court that his clients have been remorseful since they were arrested.

Following the submissions of parties, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Aje Afuwa (Mrs.) stood down her sentence for 30 minutes, but returned to courtroom after two hours to deliver her judgment. 

The convicted couple had on April 4, 2020, held a birthday party at their Ameen Estate, Eleko, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, and posted same on social media, despite a lockdown order of Federal and Lagos State governments.
